Twin 100 Lappers At Motor Mile Speedway

Waiting For Pre-Race Tech

David and the Robert Bruce Racing team went to Motor Mile Speedway in Radford Va. for twin 100 lap races last Saturday night.

Practice

David and the team went to the track Friday for an all day test session. They made several runs on the track and tried several different set-ups. By days end David sat 5th on the speed chart. On Saturday afternoon the gang started prepping for the race by trying some more set-up stuff during the 2 practice sessions.

Qualifying

David was 8th from last going out for his qualifying effort. The car was a little to loose and the best he could do was 14th fastest. We were not too upset because we knew we had a car that would race well.

1st 100 Lapper

On the start of the first 100 lapper David started 14th and as the first few laps went by he radioed in and said the car was pretty good and it showed because he quickly started moving forward. He methodically made his way forward taking his time and saving his tires. David moved in to 8th place by lap 60 and was working his way towards 7th. By lap 75 he was on the bumper of 7th place. He was patiently working on that spot when the car started to get tight, Each lap the car handling got tighter and tighter. He was never able to make the pass and by the end of the race he was really having to hold on. He ended up finishing 8th. On our post-race inspection we found that the left front tire was going flat. Since we are only allowed one set of tires we had to wait for an official to look at the tire. We found a slice in the tread and on further inspection we found a chunk of a razor blade in the tire. So we were lucky to be able to finish 8th.

2nd 100 Lapper

Because we changed the tire, the track rule is you go to the back in the next race, so we started the 2nd race from the 18th spot. On the start David agian let us know the car was pretty good and he started making his way forward. Since this was the 2nd race and we had no time to save tires David started pushing his way forward quickly. By lap 20 he was in 10th place. As David was passing for 9th the car died out and he had to pull on pit road and the team worked fast to fix it. He pulled back out but the car still wasn’t right. He pitted again and the guys were all over it. David headed back out on the track and this time the car was fixed. He ended up about 15 car lengths behind the leader, David was able to catch up a little and run right behind him but since we were several laps down we chose to follow him and just make laps and learn more about the track. He wound up finishing just a few car lengths behind the leader. The final results show him in 18th place. Not the result we wanted but we feel we learned a lot and when we go back in 2 weeks we will have a better night.
