David Polenz Takes His Second Win of 2012

After falling short of victory last weekend when David spun-out battling for the lead with seven laps remaining in the race, David and his team came back to Old Dominion Speedway fired up and ready to race hard.

Practice

When David went out for the first practice everything looked good and he was quite pleased with the handling, he was second fastest. Then in the second practice David said the car felt even better and once again he was second fastest. We made a few minor changes to the car and he headed out for the third practice, he was even happier with the car and this time he was the fastest car over-all.

Qualifying

When it came time to qualify we tried something a little different with the tires and set-up. David turned an awesome couple of laps and fell just short of the pole by 300th’s of a second and was second fastest. After the invert and handicapping David would be starting from the outside pole in the 100 lap feature.

100 Lap Race

On the start of the race David was able to get out in front of the leader by the first turn. As all of the other cars raced for position David just started hitting his marks lap after lap and stretch his lead out quickly. By lap 50 he had a full straight-away lead  over the second place car and the race had a look of going green flag all the way to the end, but on lap 85 with David leading by more than a half of a lap the caution came out erasing his lead. When the race restarted with 10 laps to go David had the top five cars on his bumper, but he was up to the task and he pulled away quickly, about 15 car lengths by the time the checkered flag waved in the air. It was a very dominating performance by David in what he said was the best handling Late Model he has ever driven. This marked David’s second win of the season.

There was something else that took place last Saturday night as well, David’s sister Jessie who races in the UCAR Division won her first career race in that division. She has been racing that division for two years going in to this season and it was an emotion filled victory lane.

However that’s not where it stopped, David’s cousin Ryan races in the Legends Car Division at ODS as well and he was able to race from his 5th starting spot to victory in the Legends 30 lap event.

So the Polenz family pulled off something that no one in the history of Old Dominion Speedway and possibly anywhere in the racing community has ever done and that is three family members winning three races in three different divisions on one night at one track. This is quite a feat and I am one proud father/uncle and probably the luckiest man in the world to be able to have moments like this with my family.
